Lower Elementary Earth and Environment Science

In this 30-week course, early elementary students will learn the basics of Earth and Environmental sciences through the building of models. Making a timeline that puts Earth’s age into perspective, modeling the formation of igneous rocks, and creating a water cycle in a bowl in order to observe evaporation, condensation, and precipitation are a few of the creative activities included in the course.

This course will be using the Real Science Odyssey Earth and Environment 1 curriculum. Your textbook/workbook will be provided.

Middle & High School Earth and Environment Science

In this 30-week course, students will build an understanding of more complex topics of Earth and Environmental sciences. Topics include the geosphere, earth-shaping forces, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the environment, and are explored through reading assignments, discussion, independent research, and creative, hands-on labs. Science vocabulary, math—an important tool for all scientists—and unit assessments are also woven throughout the course. Reading and mini research projects will be assigned weekly.

In this 30-week course, students will learn about events that occurred from the pre-historic Paleolithic period to approximately 700 CE. Students will receive weekly readings to be completed at home, then we will meet each Friday to create and do together to reinforce the the things we read about.

This course will be using the History Quest Early Times Curriculum. Your workbook will be provided.

In this 30-week course, students will be introduced to the history of cultures around the world based on their geographic features. Assigned reading will include inspiring stories, memoirs and tales of adventure centered around geography like mountains, rivers, and more. Students will have the opportunity to compare and contrast how civilizations and communites have developed in similar regions around the globe.

Our reading list will be shared in our Google Classroom and will include easily attainable and inexpensive books.

Middle & High School Big History Project

Big History is a unique course that looks at the history of the entire Universe, stretching 13.8 billion years into the past and all the way into the future. Your student will travel to the earliest stars, discover new chemical elements, investigate the Earth’s fiery origins, explore how life on Earth evolved, and journey through human history to see what the future may hold. Weekly homework assignments will include a variety of reading and writing assignments. This class requires strong writing skills.

This course will be using the Big History curriculum.

Projects will accompany some readings, and students will learn important comprehension skills like comparing and contrasting, identifying main ideas, and more. This class is good for non-readers and readers who need extra support.

Students may also choose a-la-carte enrollment and choose which novel studies they would like to join. This class is good for emerging readers.

Virtual Paragraph Writing

Mondays, August 25-April 27*. 10:00-11:00.
$360 per semester.

Virtual on Zoom

This paragraph-writing course will teach students the basics of composition. We’ll delve into paragraph structure, planning, grammar, and punctuation, as well as introducing self editing and peer editing. This curriculum is tailored to the specific students enrolled and is designed to build up to a beginner 5-paragraph essay. This class will be Google Drive/Classroom based and basic typing skills are necessary for the virtual platform. No handwriting will be expected. Students should understand basic sentence structure.

There are several free apps and online platforms for teaching typing, which I recommend for all students.

Virtual Creative Writing and 5-paragraph Essays

$360 per semester.

Virtual on Zoom

Semester 1: From storytelling to essays, this class will provide tips, tricks, and techniques to get your creative juices flowing. We'll explore how to find inspiration, use expressive vocabulary, explore different points of view, and communicate emotions and sensory experiences. Character and setting development will be practiced, as well as writing dialogue. This is a 12-week introductory class, accessible for writers who already have some experience composing 5-paragraph essays.

Semester 2: My 5-paragraph essay courses provide small-group or private instruction in development, composition, and editing through various genres of writing. This is an all-levels course, upper elementary through early high school, tailored for the specific students enrolled at that time. Students with varying skills and ages can participate seamlessly with targeted editing and grammar skills allowing for leveled advancement. This class will be Google Drive/Classroom based and basic typing skills are necessary for the virtual platform. No handwriting will be expected. Students should understand basic paragraph structure, grammar, and punctuation.

Dungeons & Dragons World Building and Collective Storytelling

Tuesdays, August 26-November 18*. 6:00pm-8:00pm.
$400/student.

Central Fort Myers (exact address will be provided upon registration)

Join us for this 12-week course where students will be taken through the process of building their world and characters before beginning gameplay. They'll gain an understanding of dungeonmastery, worldbuilding, and developing lore during the first 6 weeks. The last 6 weeks will be spent learning the basic game mechanics and playing in the world they've built. The core rules for Dungeons & Dragons will be used. No prior experience required. This class is for students 11 and older.
